What a fitting way to wrap up the one-year anniversary. One year ago today I uploaded the first page for Doe of Deadwood (originally on DA; SJ was delayed about a week). Looking at the first page, a lot has changed since then. Making comics has always been my therapy, so through the ups and downs it's always been nice to have something I can put my time into. It's always been a personal endeavor for me, but I thank everyone who's joined me along the way. I hope this next year, others who have been unsure about trying to get into comics give it a shot. You never know what you'll come up with. Have fun with your creations.

Thank you to all the friends and comrades for helping me through this year, through happy times and challenging times (work related mostly). Late night drunken escapades, talk of future adventures, reflections on all the people lost along the way. I hope everyone has a beautiful end of the year.

I've been a bad reader who hasn't commented yet, so sorry for that. But now, I have to say, that when I first found this comic I was not interested at all. The idea was intriguing but the violence turned me off. Nonetheless, for some reason, I stuck with it. I've been following the comic since before Fen arrived. Now I'm hooked. The story is wonderful and the prose from Rig has been excellent. The culture you've put into Deer, Wolves, and Crows has been inspiring. I will be excited, and sad, to see how this comic ends. Thank you for creating this.

Two possible logics. 1: Rig must regularly return to the demon tree, and after refreshing can leave once again. 2: Rig must regularly kill in order to renew her demon-ness. I find the second more likely.

@VadanDrumist: But she just killed. So if that second one was true than she wouldn't have the problem. The more likely conclusion is that Deadwood's power wore off; see how her colors changed back? After the power being gone she must get the sickness back.

Ah, but we don’t know how much time has passed. It would also make sense considering the demon tree had not informed her that she would need to return. It also makes sense considering that all demons shown are in some way sustain themselves through the loss thus far. Rig should be no different.

@VadanDrumist: Im pretty sure (and I hope!) that she has to go back to deadwood and she has to stay this time (otherwise why would deadwood give her back the powers if she just left anyway? They had a deal) I just hope deadwood doesnt make her kill fen or sth to get back her powers. As much as he annoys me, that would be really mean.

Wonder if something happened to Mr. Tree to make Rig lose her powers?

@Dreamson That is my thought as well. Methinks his leaves have withered with Rig gone.

Congrats on the anniversary!! I love this story and the art! Also the way you post so regularly :) I hope you keep this up for another 5 years :D
BTW does Rig look a bit fatter? Hard to tell with her lying down, but maybe she really is preggers?

@VadanDrumist: but I thought Rig wasn’t a demon yet. That was the end goal, right? The only reason she has powers is because Deadwood have her it. I believe one of the things that was discussed before leaving was whether or not Rig preferred leaving with Fen rather than becoming a demon. I may be wrong though.

She had already received a significant portion of power from the Deadwood. The fact that this night sickness was unexpected is proof enough that she thought her power was permanent. I consider the former option most likely because A: The Deadwood seems the type that would inform Rig if she needed to return regularly. After all even if he was counting on her realizing it and coming back there’s no guarantee she’d survive the return trip. B: The nature of demons is clearly not one of permanence. If it were they would not be so feared. It makes sense that Rig would have to fuel her power now that she is no longer supported by Deadwood. Merry Christmas by the way.

@VadanDrumist: (I am the guest, I was just on my phone so I hadn't logged in)
I did some rereading, and here's what I found.
Rig isn't a demon yet. So this refuel concept wouldn't work for her, although it remains true for other demons. That being said, Deadwood does need fuel. Rig's power is purely Deadwood's. Before Deadwood gave her power to fight the deer, her demon-ness would fade whenever she would exit the forest. It can be assumed that if she's far from Deadwood for long, she will die. but that was before deadwood gave her his power to fight.
http://doeofdeadwood.smackjeeves.com/comics/2690458/pae-158/
Rig suspects that she will remain this way as long as Deadwood's power remains stable. This may be true?? Maybe because Rig isn't there to help Deadwood refuel, they are losing power. Which means Rig is also losing power, as it is linked to Deadwood and not her own. Sorry if I'm annoying you ^^;
Merry Christmas!

Maybe something has happened to Deadwood. The tree mentions earlier how expensive Rig was to make (Assuming from his own energy), and it's implied that she is linked to him if only as a power source. The demon made her, it's probable he could also opt to simply not share any more of his power. If that's the case, I was wondering if and when it would happen, when Deadwood would rein in his MIA creation (He does say she has to stay in HIS forest several times for him to keep death at bay and keep her alive). Maybe Deadwood will do something patently deamon-esque and take her (presumed?) unborn fawn? Can't wait for the next page!

This comic sure is an adventure. It always baffled me a bit that it's your therapy because of the uneasy nature of this story but we're all different and I'm glad you're sharing this with us. :) I'm actually trying to learn how to turn making comics into therapy for myself too, I lost that somewhere along the way and it has hurt a lot. It's uplifting seeing creators like you who do it after all.
